Two people were killed as gale-force winds flailed Italy on Monday.

A 38-year-old worker, Roberto Di Ponzio, died after being struck by a lamppost, toppled by strong winds, while he was using a crane to perform maintenance on a lighting system near a cemetery in Taranto.

A 12-year-old girl, Alicia Amoruso, was killed by a tree felled by high winds at Bisceglie north of Bari.

Elsewhere, strong sirocco winds halted hydrofoil services from Naples to the islands of Ischia and Procida, flights were diverted because of high winds from Bari to Brindisi and Fiumicino, and mayors across Puglia closed parks and gardens.

There were yellow wind alerts in southern Campania and Puglia.
