A man wielding a machete stabbed three people on a New York City subway platform before being fatally shot by police on Saturday, April 11, city officials said.

At around 9:40 a.m., New York City police officers responded to an assault in progress at Grand Central Station, in Midtown Manhattan. Prior to NYPD’s arrival, a man is accused of stabbing an 84-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man on the subway platform, police said.

An officer opened fire and hit the suspect wielding the knife, NYPD said. The man was transported by EMS to a local hospital in critical condition, police said. In an X post, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the suspect has been pronounced dead.

The three victims were also transported to a local hospital and are described as in stable condition. Two officers were also transported to a local hospital but police said they were not stabbed and are not injured.

“I’m grateful to the NYPD for their quick response and for preventing additional violence,” Mamdani said.
