The Karkala Town police on Saturday, arrested Soumya Shetty, a resident of Banglegudde Kaje in Karkala taluk, on charges of abetting suicide of her husband Sudeep on March 22.
In the complaint filed at Karkala Town police, Sudeep’s father B. Damodar said Sudeep’s marriage with Soumya Shetty was solemnised on February 17 and the two were living in a house in Banglegudde Kaje. On March 17, Sudeep left in the car with his mother to attend a family function. Soumya Shetty came in a two-wheeler and waylaid the car. He accused Soumya of abusing Sudeep and issuing death threats to his son. Then Sudeep moved in his car with his mother to Karkala.
Ms. Soumya called her relative to tell that Sudeep has attempted suicide by drinking a poisonous substance in Karkala and he was admitted to a private hospital on March 22. Sudeep was shifted to another private hospital in Udupi and then to a private hospital in Mangaluru where he succumbed on March 29. In the complaint, Damodar accused Soumya of abetting his son’s suicide.
Karkala Town Incharge Police Inspector D.R. Manjappa did preliminary investigation, collected evidence, and arrested Soumya Shetty on April 11. She was produced before the jurisdictional court, which remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.
