The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of a reported case of alleged gang rape of a woman by her husband and his associates in Hyderabad.

In a statement issued on April 10, the Commission said the incident, involving the alleged assault of a newly-wed woman, raised serious concerns over the violation of dignity, bodily autonomy and safety within marriage.

A complaint was initially lodged at the Kukatpally police station and the case was later forwarded to Begumpet police station. A case was booked by the Begumpet police and based on the preliminary probe, the prime accused, her husband, was arrested and remanded to judicial custody. Efforts are underway to trace three other accused named by the complainant, Begumpet Inspector P. Saidulu said.

The Chairperson of the Commission directed the Director General of Police to ensure that a case is registered under relevant legal provisions, all accused are arrested, and a prompt and time-bound investigation is carried out. Directions have also been issued to provide necessary protection to the survivor.

The Commission has sought a detailed action taken report from the State police within seven days.
