A 62-year-old woman at Banakal, in Mudigere taluk of Chikkamagaluru district in Karnataka, lived with the decomposing remains of her husband for a few days, unaware that he had passed away. The incident came to light on April 8 when the neighbours suspected a death in the family after sensing a pungent smell.

Cyril Monis, 78, lived with his 62-year-old wife Cysil at Banakal. Their son Melwin works in a glass factory in Bengaluru while their daughter is employed as a teacher in Dubai, UAE.

A year ago Cyril Monis, according to his son, suffered a stroke that left him with severe health complications. Meanwhile, Cysil had been struggling with deteriorating mental health for over three years. Melwin would visit his parents occasionally, and look after their healthcare. Last time he visited was about 10 days ago. Since then, he called home regularly. The mother would take the call and convey to her son that everything was fine at home.

On April 8, one of the neighbours sensed the smell and informed Melwin. Melwin contacted his friends and asked them to visit his home.

“I came to know about the incident through a neighbour. Later, I informed my friends, and I too came home," Melwin said. He stated that his mother probably did not comprehend what had happened because of her mental condition.
