The Jacobite Syrian Christian Church has demanded an inquiry into the allegation that the police hadattacked its members following tension that prevailed at the St. Mary’s Church in Kattachira, near Kayamkulam, over the burial of a16-year-old boy on Sunday.
Kuriakose Mar Theophilos, chairperson of the media cell of the Jacobite Church, said in a release on Wednesday that the incident amounted to violation of human rights of its members, including women and children.
He alleged that the police tried to stop parish members from entering the church in violation of the provisions under the Kerala Christian Cemeteries (Right to Burial of Corpse) Act. The Jacobite Church alleged that there was a conspiracy behind the police action.
However, the Kurathikad police rejected the allegations and pointed out that two police officials were injured in the melee. A case was registered against persons found responsible for the attack on the officials. The police had only tried to comply with the directives issued by the Supreme Court over the Church dispute, they said.
