I
t was a sign of rapprochement. On the evening of Friday, April 3, at the Parc des Princes, the new mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Grégoire, sat next to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to watch the club host Toulouse FC on Ligue 1 matchday 28. What now seems less likely is the club's long-discussed move away from its current home in western Paris to a new stadium
While PSG's stadium plans were one of the issues in the Paris mayoral race, the main candidates all supported reopening talks to keep the club in the capital. With Anne Hidalgo not seeking another term, the previous rift between the mayor and PSG president, which had brought negotiations to a halt at the start of 2024, is no longer an obstacle. The Socialist Grégoire had already personally supported the sale of the stadium to PSG's ownership during the campaign.
Talks have resumed all the more easily because PSG's threats to leave always contained an element of bluff, while the two sites under consideration – Massy and Poissy – appeared to be strategic missteps.
