April 7 (UPI) -- Schools in Britain will get specialized training to prevent knife crime in high-risk locations in and around schools.

Up to 250 schools in knife-crime heavy areas will get special training to divert children from serious violence, the British government said. It is investing $1.6 million for programs such as mentoring for high-risk students, chaperones on school routes and more. Around 50 schools will get more intense and tailored support, the government said.

The program is called the Safety In and Around Schools Partnership, and it will train school leaders on the risk of knife crime and develop "local solutions to improve pupil safety and prevent serious violence."

It's part of the government's plan to reduce knife crime by half within 10 years.

Identifying the schools that need the help will come from mapping technology from the Home Office to find places where knife crime is most prevalent during times when students walk to and from schools.
