Trump Says He’ll Pay All DHS Workers Through Executive Order, Bypassing CongressPresident Donald Trump declared Thursday that he will take executive action to pay all employees at the Department of Homeland Security, a legally questionable move that would bypass Congress.“I will soon sign an order to pay ALL of the incredible employees at the Department of Homeland Security,” the president posted on social media.His announcement comes a day after Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) announced a vague, two-part deal to fully fund DHS after weeks of the agency being partially shut down.But the two chambers are still at odds with each other over how to do this. The Senate acted Thursday to unanimously pass a bill to fund all of DHS through Sept. 30, except for the two agencies that Democrats are demanding reforms to: Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Customs and Border Patrol. The House chose not to take up that bill, which means the shutdown continues.In his social media post, Trump praised Johnson and Thune for their work and declared, “Republicans are UNIFIED, and moving forward on a plan that will reload funding for our FANTASTIC Border Patrol and Immigration Enforcement Officers.”He also tried to blame Democrats for the weekslong shutdown, even though Republicans control the House, Senate and the White House. Clearly, Trump’s abrupt announcement stems from his wanting to get credit for people getting paid, even if it means injecting more chaos into the situation in Congress.“Their families have suffered far too long at the hands of the Extreme Liberal ‘Leaders,’ Cryin’ Chuck Schumer and Hakeem ‘High Tax’ Jeffries,” he said in his post. “Nevertheless, help is on the way for our Brave and Patriotic Public Servants who have continued to work hard, and do their part to protect and defend our Country.”See All UpdatesClose
