The Rotary Clubs across the world would continue with their surveillance mechanism, awareness initiatives and administer Pulse Polio vaccine drops to children aged upto 5, said Rotary International (RI) president elect (2026-27) Olayinka Hakeem Babalola here on Wednesday.Speaking to media persons, he said polio was eradicated 99.99% across the globe. Many countries, including India, had achieved this distinction. Some nations like Afghanistan and Pakistan had polio cases. Hence, the Rotarians would continue to educate the people about the polio virus and the need to totally eradicate it. “We will keep immunising babies,” he stressed.A nation having achieved the goal did not necessarily mean stopping of immunisation. It was after all a virus, but it could not be neglected. Hence, there was utmost need to be vigilant, Mr. Babalola cautioned. The Rotary spent several million dollars on key areas with governments and other stakeholders.RI vice-president elect M. Muruganandam said with growing membership in Rotary from Tamil Nadu, the RI had commended the role of the office-bearers. “We are here as a team to give a helping hand to the needy people in society.” The Rotary had the highest focus on education, literacy and sanitation, he added.Celebrating its 125th year in 2030, the Rotary would conduct membership development drive. Suggesting youngsters to join the Rotaract from an early age of 18, the Rotarians, including past governors Kumanan and Ananda Jothi, said it would instil confidence in them and enrich their skills.Rotary governor Karthik, assistant governor ‘Nellai’ Balu and others explained the significance of educating women, especially about prevention of diseases like cancer.
