The Bill that sought to recognise Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday (April 1, 2026).

The Bill has been passed by the Lok Sabha by a voice vote. While almost all parties supported the Bill, the YSR Congress walked out after making the point that the bill should have given a timeline to complete the promises made to farmers who gave their lands to make Amravati the capital of Andhra Pradesh.

Earlier in the day, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju in Lok Sabha said that though the Bill was listed, it would not be taken up for consideration and passing. He accused the Opposition of misleading Kerala and the country because of the Assembly elections in the State.
