A clean-up drive at Guindy National Park was held to mark Earth Hour 2026 in Chennai on Saturday (March 28).
Organised by WWF-India, the drive brought together nearly 100 volunteers from Ramco Systems and Hindustan College, a press release said.
The release added that the activity covered boundary areas of the park adjoining residential neighbourhoods, where waste dumping has been a recurring concern. Volunteers collected around 250 kg of plastic waste, most of it originating from nearby habitations.
Participants also held discussions on waste disposal and the need to protect urban green spaces. At Guindy Children’s Park, volunteers engaged children on eco-friendly practices.
Elsewhere in the city, institutions marked Earth Hour through symbolic and awareness activities. The Greater Chennai Corporation switched off lights at Ripon Building and Victoria Public Hall, while Chennai Metro Rail Limited turned off non-essential lighting at Nandanam. Campaigns were also conducted at public spaces including Chennai International Airport and Anna Nagar, alongside participation from the hospitality sector, the release said.
