"For even longer, Bill has been influencing American discourse – one politically incorrect joke at a time."The Thursday announcement comes just six days after Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, told The Atlantic that news of Maher receiving the award was "fake news."Maher's award ceremony will be the last event at the Kennedy Center before it closes for two years for renovations.
