Brown’s Xavier Collins, in Dan Fogelman’s hit Hulu apocalyptic political thriller Paradise. This role marks a career-defining moment for Okuma, and a full-circle one at that. More than a decade ago, Okuma auditioned to play Brown’s wife on NBC’s award-winning This Is Us, another Fogelman series. She didn’t land the part, which ultimately went to Susan Kelechi Watson. Though admittedly disappointed at the time, Okuma sees it differently now when she looks back. “I didn’t get that part, but I got this one,” she said. “So it was in the cards at some point. I just had to let the universe take care of it.”What once felt like a missed opportunity became a lesson in patience and faith. “That’s just called being an actor,” Okuma added, noting that the timing ultimately worked in her favor. “It wasn’t meant for me. It was meant for Susan.”Okuma and her husband have since watched This Is Us in its entirety and count it among their favorite shows. As both an actor and a writer, she has a deep appreciation for Fogelman’s signature storytelling style and his keen eye for casting.“I understand how the Fogelman brain works with flashbacks, and I fully understand how they serve the story,” she explained. “And I know that was not the part for me because Susan was perfect, absolutely perfect, in that role.”MORE FOR YOUEnuka Okuma said she also auditioned years ago to play Sterling K. Her performance stands out as one of the series’ strongest, particularly in season two, as Teri reunites with Xavier following years of separation.Fogelman’s use of flashbacks continues to deepen the story, revealing how the couple first met in a hospital while recovering from serious injuries. “In season one, you see a functioning married couple with two very distinct personalities,” Okuma explained. “And what I love about the meet-cute this season is that those personalities were there from the beginning.”That emotional foundation carries through to their long-awaited reunion, which is one of the season’s most powerful moments. “Their love is so strong and so powerful,” she added. “I love that it was there from the very beginning.”Season two also explores Teri’s life during the years apart, including her time living with a small group of survivors. Among them is Gary Jones, a socially awkward mailman played by Cameron Britton, whose complex personality adds tension to the storyline.Despite Gary’s violent actions, including killing a member of the group and attempting to prevent Teri’s reunion with Xavier, Okuma sees nuance in the character.“I don’t think Gary is a bad guy,” she said. “He does bad things, but out of love and in extreme circumstances. He’s someone who’s been pushed to an edge we might all be capable of.”Teri recognizes both the danger and humanity in him. “She wouldn’t go back into that post office if she didn’t believe that, at his core, Gary is a good person,” Okuma added. “He’s trying to protect the world he’s built.”Fogelman and his team have crafted a genre-defying series that blends political thriller, sci-fi, and emotional drama across its first two seasons (eight episodes each). Season two premiered on Hulu on February 23 with a three-episode debut, followed by weekly releases through March 30. Fans can only begin to imagine how season two will end. Sterling K. It’s a well-oiled machine. I feel really lucky to be a part of this group of people.” That collaborative energy has helped shape Paradise into one of Hulu’s most compelling original series. What began as a political thriller in season one quickly evolved into a high-concept apocalyptic sci-fi drama, with season two pushing those boundaries even further. As for what’s ahead in the already-confirmed season three, Okuma remains tight-lipped, but intrigued.“Who knows what the future holds?” she concluded. “I can tell you it’ll be nothing we could imagine. That’s the way Dan’s brain works. There have been so many genres clashing and bending in this show. This show defies description. It’s truly in a class of its own.”
