Pentagon Considering 82nd Airborne Troop Deployment In Iran: NYTThe Pentagon is considering a deployment of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division, the New York Times reported Monday, signaling that President Donald Trump may be considering taking Iran’s Kharg Island soon.The combat troops would come from the 82nd Airborne’s “Immediate Response Force,” a force of about 3,000 soldiers capable of deploying anywhere in the world within 18 hours, the Times said.The Times noted that the Pentagon is alternatively considering sending the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, since about 2,500 troops from that unit are already en route to the area. The U.S. could also take the island with a combination of Airborne and Marine troops.Kharg Island has been closely watched amid Trump’s war, as its waters are deep enough to serve as the main export hub for Iranian oil.
