How can Israelis be genuinely shocked by the death of the Bani Odeh family, and to be apathetic, in the best case, to the many thousands killed in Gaza?

Israeli society – from the left wing to the right – was shocked by the killing over the weekend of members of the Bani Odeh family from the West Bank village of Tammun while they were on the way to shop for Ramadan. The condemnation came from every direction. For a moment, it appeared that there was still a basic consensus about the value of human life, even when it involved Palestinians.
