March 20 (UPI) -- Project Hail Mary, a new sci-fi film starring Ryan Gosling, opens in theaters Friday.

The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, which follows Ryland Grace (Gosling), a man who wakes to find himself the sole survivor aboard the Hail Mary spacecraft. Ryland has no memory of his past.

Project Hail Mary is written by Drew Goddard and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. The movie is one of many films based on books set in space. Here are five others:
