A tourist, who was taking a selfie at the Needle Rock View Point near Gudalur sustained injuries after falling more than a 100-feet after he slipped from the cliff.
The injured, identified as Sivagurunathan, from Chengalpattu, was visiting the popular tourist spot on Thursday (March 19, 2026) and fell when he reportedly was taking a selfie on the cliff. In the fall, he suffered injuries which incapacitated him. Forest Department and Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to the spot and managed to secure him to a stretcher.
First aid was facilitated and nutrition provided, but have so far been unable to extricate him from the cliff. Officials said that Sivagurunathan was being kept warm and is being provided medical support. They have requested help from the military cantonment in Wellington to help extricate Sivagurunathan.
