Members of the State Sand Lorry Owners Federation have submitted their demands to various political parties, seeking their inclusion in election manifestos. The charter of demands includes formation of a welfare board for motor transport workers and owners.

Even as political parties are finalising their poll strategies, the federation has met representatives of various political parties, seeking to incorporate its charter of demands in their election manifestos.

The federation has demanded that the State government take over lapsed toll booths on national highways and collect only a maintenance fee. It has called for action to remove 12 such defunct toll plazas in the State.

Moreover, the State government must undertake direct sales of river sand and also open sand quarries to curb illegal sand quarrying. It has sought framing of rules to regulate M-sand trade and check the operation of unlicensed M-sand manufacturing units. The federation has called for creation of lay-bys along the State roads for trucks travelling long distances, on the lines of Karnataka.

S. Yuvaraj, the association’s president, said “We have submitted a 15-point charter of demands to political parties to be included in their poll manifestos. We hope some of the demands would be implemented by the new government.”
