Access to good health care must not be allowed to become a luxury only for the few who can afford it, Pope Leo XIV said on Wednesday during an audience with participants in a healthcare conference currently underway in Rome.

"Health must not be a luxury for the few, but an essential condition for social peace," the American pontiff said.

"Universal health coverage is not merely a technical goal to be achieved; it is first and foremost a moral imperative for societies that wish to call themselves just.

"Health protection and care must be accessible to the most vulnerable, because this is required by their dignity and also to prevent injustice from becoming a seed of conflict".
