A suspect is dead, and another person is injured after a shooting erupted at a Department of Veterans Affairs clinic in northwestern Georgia, authorities said on Tuesday, March 17.

Jasper Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at the Veterans Affairs clinic at around 1:30 p.m. local time, the city of Jasper, Georgia, said in a statement. When officers arrived at the scene, the city said they located and confronted the gunman, who was shot and killed.

One victim was also found at the scene and was transported for treatment before being airlifted to a hospital, according to the city. Their condition is unknown.

Jasper Police Chief Matt Dawkins said the suspect was from the Jasper area but did not provide further details. He added that officers were dispatched after receiving a report of shots fired at the clinic, and the suspect was shot outside.

"We do know that it happened, but we don't know what led up to it," Dawkins told reporters at the scene. "It all happened real fast. But I do know everybody in there. As far as I know, nobody else is injured. The people that were inside, just one victim."
