March 16 (UPI) -- The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to trade a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft to the New York Jets in exchange for quarterback Justin Fields, a league source told UPI on Monday.
The trade is pending a physical.
Fields started nine games last season for the Jets. The Jets signed the No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to a two-year contract last off-season.
He will now back up Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes, who is recovering from a torn ACL. The Arizona Cardinals signed Mahomes' previous backup, Gardener Minshew, to a one-year deal last week. Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener are the other Chiefs quarterbacks under contract in 2026.
Geno Smith, Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe are the Jets' quarterbacks under contract next season.
