Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday telephoned Pope Leo XIV and voiced his concern over the "worrying" developments in the Middle East conflict and the living conditions of the Palestinian people amid rising Israeli settler violence and worsening conditions in Gaza, the Vatican said.

"This morning, the Holy Father Leo XIV received a telephone call from Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine, regarding the worrying developments in the conflict in the Middle East and the living conditions of the Palestinian people," said the Holy See's press office.

"During the conversation, the Holy Father renewed the Holy See's commitment to peace, to be achieved through political and diplomatic dialogue and full respect for international law."
