A newborn child suffered burn injuries after the warmer machine caught fire in the Corporation maternity hospital in Purasawalkam on Saturday.

The police said a couple, Anand Babu and Dhanalakshmi, residing in Purasawalkam, were expecting a baby.

On Saturday, Dhanalakshmi delivered a baby boy at the Corporation Maternity Hospital on Kariyappa Street in Purasawalkam. The hospital's medical staff placed the baby in a warmer to regulate his body temperature. At that moment, an electrical short circuit occurred causing the warmer machine to catch fire.

The nurses immediately switched off the machine and rescued the infant. However, the baby sustained burns to his back and thighs. The infant has been admitted to the Egmore Government Institute of Child Health for advanced treatment.

A senior official of the Health Department of the Chennai Corporation said the injured baby is admitted in ICH and treatment is being given.
