Protesting the Tamil Nadu Government’s decision to allow private veterinary colleges in the State, students of Government Veterinary College and Research Institute at Ramaiyanpatti on city outskirts staged sit-in protest on their college premises on Friday.

The protesting students said job opportunities for the 680 veterinary doctors graduating from the seven government veterinary colleges in Chennai, Namakkal, Tirunelveli, Orathanadu, Salem and Udumalaipet were “very minimal”. Even as these students were struggling to get placed in the government institutions, the decision to start private veterinary colleges would further worsen the situation.

Hence, the Tamil Nadu Government should give up its decision to start private veterinary colleges in the State, the protesting students said.
