The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) launched premium bus services targeting office-goers who travel in private vehicles but prefer to shift to public transport, provided the buses are not crowded.
Transport and Electricity Minister S.S. Sivasankar launched five new air-conditioned electric buses on two routes on Wednesday. MTC M.D. T. Prabhushankar also participated in the event.
A senior official of the MTC said that the air-conditioned electric buses would be operated on two routes from Kelambakkam to CMBT (570) and Kilambakkam to Thiruvanmiyur (91). The premium bus services will be operated with a minimum fare of ₹50 and a maximum of ₹150, targeting middle-level managers working in offices on Rajiv Gandhi Salai.
While the 570 bus route would have three buses, the 91 bus service would have two buses. There are plans to expand the premium bus services in the next phase, the official added.
The premium buses would be operated under gross cost contract basis, similar to the present e-buses being operated by OHM, that is a subsidiary of Ashok Leyland.
