S Monaco has failed to eliminate Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) from the Champions League, despite scoring four goals over the two legs of their play-off for a spot in the round of 16. However, by handing PSG another three goals on Friday night at the Parc des Princes (1-3), this time in Ligue 1, AS Monaco has further deepened doubts about the Parisian club.
PSG was eliminated from the Coupe de France by local rival Paris FC in January and finished only 11th in the first phase of the Champions League, and has also struggled in the French league. Although it is leading after 25 matchdays, the club has eight points fewer than at the same stage last season, with 54 goals scored compared to 70, and four defeats whereas it had remained unbeaten the previous year.
So PSG is heading into the clash with Chelsea FC on Wednesday, March 11, burdened with worries, as the round of 16 marks the real start of the second half of the season – a decisive period for Europe's elite clubs. With the return leg in London the following week, the titleholder faces a scenario it knows all too well: having little left to play, and this early on.
A predictable setback
