Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has said that the State government has decided to implement categorisation of the Scheduled Castes as the demand of the Madiga community members which is among the backward communities is justified.

“There were political pressures against categorisation of the Scheduled Castes, but the government believed that the demand is justified and hence stood by the community. Telangana became the first State to implement SC categorisation,” he said. The Chief Minister was addressing a felicitation meeting organised by the employees of Madiga community members on Friday as a thanks-giving gesture for implementing SC categorisation.

He exhorted the employees to stand by the government in countering attacks against it. He said categorisation was not the only solution to the problems faced by SC communities, and that it was not a big task for the government to ensure reservations in promotions, higher education, and the protection of assignment lands. “We should exercise utmost caution in our pursuit of reaching out welfare and development programmes to the grassroot levels,” he said.

The issue was pending for a long time and several commissions were appointed while some people sacrificed their lives in pursuit of the demand. He recalled the helping hand he extended to the community in its two-decade struggle to achieve categorisation of the Scheduled Castes.
