A popular barbecue sauce sold at retailers nationwide is being recalled after food safety officials said the product was mislabeled and contained undeclared allergens.
According to a notice published on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) website, Georgia-based Savannah Bee Company announced a recall on Friday, Feb. 27, of its 16-fluid-ounce Honey BBQ Sauce-Mustard due to undeclared wheat and soy.
The FDA said the recall was initiated after a customer reported that the company's “Honey BBQ Sauce-Sweet” was mislabeled with a “Honey BBQ Sauce-Mustard” label instead.
In photos shared by the FDA, correctly labeled Honey BBQ Sauce-Mustard bottles are filled with a light yellow sauce, while the mislabeled bottles have the same label but are filled with dark brown sauce instead.
After the mislabeling was flagged, the company discovered that the mislabeled Honey BBQ Sauce-Mustard bottles did not include the allergens wheat and soy, which are used in the recipe for Honey BBQ Sauce-Sweet bottles.
