Hegseth Dodges Questions On Deadly Girls School BombingSecretary of Defense Pete Hegseth declined to offer details on the missile strike on an all-girls elementary school in southern Iran, telling reporters that it remains under investigation.“We, of course, never target civilian targets. But we are taking a look and investigating that,” he said when asked about what is known about the strike, which occurred on the first day of the U.S. and Israeli attacks.Hegseth also declined to say, when asked, which country's munition was used in the bombing, responding that it’s under investigation.More than 160 children were killed in the strike that hit the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls school in Minab, a panel of experts with the United Nations said Wednesday. Most of the victims appear to have been aged 7 to 12, Reuters reported.Intentionally targeting a civilian site, like a school, hospital or residential structure, constitutes a war crime under international humanitarian law. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday also pushed off blame for the strike, while suggesting the Iranians may be at fault.“We would have no interest, and frankly no incentive, to target civilian infrastructure. The Iranians are, on the other hand, targeting civilian infrastructure. You guys have seen it. I’m sure you’ve seen it. They’re hitting hotels. They’re hitting embassies. They’re hitting airports. They’re hitting oil infrastructure," he said.See All UpdatesClose
