Ian von Memerty, a South African television personality who documented his plans to take his own life, has died aged 61.

The star, who was previously a judge on South Africa's Got Talent and hosted the country's version of Strictly Come Dancing, passed away a week ago, his family said.

Their statement did not say how Von Memerty had died, but said: "As a family we have done everything we can to love & respect him on his journey."

In a months-long series of Facebook posts, Von Memerty had spoken candidly about choosing to end his life. He said he did not want to experience the physical and cognitive effects of aging, become poor or be financially dependent on his family.

Von Memerty's family announced the TV star's death on his Facebook page, revealing he had passed away in Johannesburg during the early hours of last Monday.
