Representatives from students unions, trade unions, Dalit associations and Left parties staged a protest at the Gandhi statue near GVMC on Monday. They called for action against the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak (RSS), alleging that it was ‘fanning communal passions’ among students in the Andhra University. The participants urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to initiate immediate measures to curb the activities of the RSS within the university campus. They also demanded the arrest of RSS activists and BJP-affiliated unions. They alleged that they are disturbing the peaceful atmosphere in the campus by raking communal issues indulging in attacks on students, teachers and staff. They also demanded booking cases on RSS activists, who they alleged, trolled girl students of the university after posting their photos on social media. They objected towards the inaction of the university and police officials and alleged that they had failed to book cases on the RSS workers, who had torn the flags of the students unions and dalit sangham, violating Section 30 of the Police Act, which was imposed in the campus. The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) district vice-president B. Padma, CITU district general secretary R.K.S.V. Kumar, AITUC leaders P. Ramana and Manmadha Rao, IFTU leader Tirupati Rao, APFTU leader Deva and CFTUI leader Lakshmi participated in the protest.
