March 2 (UPI) -- Colorado quarterback Dominiq Ponder died from injuries he sustained during a single-car crash in Boulder, Colo., police said. He was 23.

The Colorado State Patrol said Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model 3 when he lost control and hit a guardrail and an electrical line pole at about 3 a.m. MST Sunday in Boulder. The car rolled down an embankment and caught fire. Ponder was declared dead at the scene.

A preliminary police investigation found that "speed is suspected as a factor." An investigation by the Colorado State Patrol vehicular crimes unit is ongoing.

"God, please comfort the entire Ponder family during this difficult time," Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders said in a news release. "Dominiq was one of my favorites because of his passion, his heart and his willingness to go beyond what was asked.

"He will certainly be remembered, missed, and in our thoughts and prayers."
