Defence Minister Guido Crosetto is back in Italy after briefly getting stranded in Dubai at the weekend after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran.
The opposition have attacked the minister, who was in Dubai for personal reasons and said he would pay three times the cost of the military flight to bring him back, and the rest of the government over the fact they did not know the attacks were about to start.
The 5-Star Movement (M5S) presented a parliamentary question about the case and called on Crosetto to resign.
"This is a shocking episode that requires serious reflection," said M5S Vice President Stefano Patuanelli before Crosetto returned.
"The head of the ministry of defence is not physically in the country and cannot swiftly return to the country in one of the most delicate moments for international security in recent years.
