A doctor pursuing a super-specialty course has flagged the omission of the Dr. C.M.K. Reddy university gold medal for MS General Surgery during the convocation ceremony held on Friday by the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. He had been selected as the recipient of the medal for 2024.

Sibichakkaravarthy, who studied MS General Surgery at Madras Medical College (MMC), said that he had appeared for the gold medal examination conducted every year by the MMC’s Institute of Vascular Surgery, and emerged as the topper in that year. “Final year students of MS General Surgery from all colleges across the State take part in the exam. A theory exam followed by practical and case presentations are conducted and the best among the top three is selected. I emerged as the topper for 2024,” he said.

Usually, the institute forwards the list to the university and the medals are presented at the convocation. “I also followed up with the university for the last six months on the convocation date. But to my surprise, I received no communication regarding the convocation.

I contacted the institute and they said the details were already sent to the university. I initially thought my name was missed but then when I checked the list of candidates getting medals, I found that Dr. C.M.K. Reddy Gold Medal for General Surgery had been given a miss this year,” he added. University officials said they are waiting for a clarification regarding the medal sponsor and will look into it.
