The United States has shown "willingness" to cooperate with arch-foe Havana on investigating a shootout between Cuba's coast guard and a US speedboat that left four passengers dead, the island's deputy foreign minister said Thursday, February 26.

"US government authorities have expressed their willingness to cooperate in clarifying these regrettable events," Carlos Fernandez de Cossio told reporters.

Cuba says the boat, intercepted Wednesday off its north coast, was carrying 10 "armed" passengers who "intended to carry out an incursion for the purposes of terrorism."

Cuba said four people on board were killed, with another six wounded.
