The North Carolina mother at the center of a 24-year-old missing persons case has been arrested on an outstanding warrant, authorities announced Feb. 26.

Michele Hundley Smith was arrested by the Robeson County Sheriff's Office for failing to appear for a court date stemming from a driving while intoxicated charge issued by the Eden Police Department in November 2001, the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post. Court records indicate that the missed court date occurred in December 2001.

Smith, who went Christmas shopping 24 years ago and disappeared, was found “alive and well” in an undisclosed part of North Carolina, investigators with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said in a news release on Feb. 20.

The arrest occurred on Feb. 25, according to the Facebook post. Smith posted bond and has been released. Court records show that a hearing is set for March 26. It is unclear if Smith has retained legal counsel.

USA TODAY reached out to Captain Jonathan Cheek of the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office, who reiterated what was said in the post.
