The broadcast of a racial slur at the Bafta Film Awards was "completely unacceptable and harmful", the culture secretary has said.

Lisa Nandy said she had spoken to outgoing BBC director general Tim Davie and welcomed its investigation into Sunday's incident, saying the "BBC must ensure that this never happens again".

Earlier the BBC described the slur made by Tourette's campaigner John Davidson, whose condition involves involuntary verbal tics, as a "serious mistake" and it would fast-track an investigation.

Nandy said she shared the "serious concerns raised by so many people" after the slur was shouted while black actors Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.

A BBC spokesman said: "The director-general has instructed the Executive Complaints Unit (ECU) to complete a fast-tracked investigation and provide a full response to complainants."
