Vice President JD Vance slammed Democrats who attended President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address Tuesday, but did not stand up when he called on lawmakers to display an endorsement of his statement about protecting American citizens instead of undocumented immigrants.“Well, I saw a couple of things, Bill — first of all, obviously most Democrats didn’t stand up or clap, and what a shame that is,” Vance told ”America’s Newsroom” anchor Bill Hemmer on Fox News Wednesday. The president delivered the longest State of the Union address Tuesday night, where he made several false claims, including, but not limited to, falling prices, ending wars and the success of his tariffs.Democrats who opted out of the alternative “People’s State of the Union” counterprogram to attend Trump’s speech faced the president’s disapproval. At one point in his 108-minute speech, Trump told the room he’s “ inviting every legislature to join with my administration in reaffirming a fundamental principle — if you agree with this statement, then stand up and show your support.”WASHINGTON, D.C. - FEBRUARY 24: U.S. President Donald Trump delivers his State of the Union address, later shaming Democrats for not standing up when he called on support for his statement about protecting American citizens, "not illegal aliens."Anadolu via Getty Images“The first duty of the American government is to protect American citizens, not illegal aliens,” Trump said before scolding Democrats, telling them, “you should be ashamed of yourselves for not standing up.”Vance added to the president’s shaming, telling Hemmer, “What a sad commentary that is on the Democratic Party, that the idea that the American government should stand for American citizens, not illegal aliens. That shouldn’t be controversial, but apparently it was to the Democrats.”The vice president said he saw the “cowardice” of a few Democrats, who he claimed were clapping politely, but not standing up. “They were all looking around for cues from their colleagues because they didn’t have the courage to stand on their own. And that, more than anything, Bill is the saddest commentary on the Democratic Party,” Vance said.“That not only will they not stand for the idea that Americans should come first, they won’t even have the courage of their convictions, they lean on the person to their left and their right, rather than actually have some conviction,” the vice president continued. Conservatives delivered high praise for Trump’s speech, while Democrats tore it apart. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.), who walked out in the middle of the speech, told followers on Bluesky he “couldn’t sit through hours of Trump’s lies” and that “Americans know the truth: he’s spiking prices and wrecking our economy. We’re a better country than this.”Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) described the president’s address to the nation as a “state of delusion,” while Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) bluntly called the speech “lazy.”Close
