The Additional District and Sessions Judge, Fast Track Sessions Court-2, Mangaluru, K.S. Maanu, has sentenced 21-year-old Nagaraj Shivappa Duragannavar to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment on finding him guilty of raping a minor girl after promising to marry her.The Judge also imposed a total fine of ₹50,000. Duragannavar was found guilty of offences punishable under Section 69 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.As per the chargesheet, Duragannavar sexually assaulted the minor girl on February 25, 2025 and March 13, 2025. After she became pregnant, Duragannavar refused to marry her. On the complaint by the victim on August 11, 2025, the Mangaluru women police registered it and arrested Duragannavar.The Judge sentenced Duragannavar to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹40,000 for the offence under Section 6 of the POCSO Act. The Judge sentenced him to five years and imposed a fine of ₹10,000 for the offence under Section 69 of the BNS. Both sentences will run concurrently.The case has been disposed within six months of registration of the case in August 2025.The Judge said the total fine amount of ₹ 50,000 should be paid as compensation to the victim. The victim was liable for compensation of ₹ 6.5 lakh from the District Legal Services Authority, the Judge said.Sahana Devi acted as the special public prosecutor in the case.
