Feb. 24 (Asia Today) -- China has imposed export controls on 40 Japanese companies and organizations, targeting dual-use goods with potential military applications, according to announcements by China's Ministry of Commerce and Japanese media reports Tuesday.

Japanese newspapers said the move appears to be a response to recent remarks by Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae regarding a possible Taiwan contingency.

The Yomiuri Shimbun reported that 20 companies - including Mitsubishi Shipbuilding, a unit of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, IHI Corporation engine affiliates and NEC Aerospace Systems - were placed under export bans. Another 20 entities, including Subaru Corporation and Eneos Holdings, were reportedly subject to enhanced screening.

The Asahi Shimbun said the restrictions cover minerals and chemical products, including rare earth materials, and prohibit provision of such items to individuals and organizations outside China without special approval.
