Over the weekend, cities across Mexico were practically shut down as a wave of violence broke out after government forces killed Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, commonly known as "El Mencho", a powerful cartel leader.
Prior to becoming one of the largest cartel kingpins in Mexico, El Mencho had started his drug business career on the streets of San Francisco throughout the mid-1980s to early 1990s, according to reporting from the Louisville Courier Journal.
Throughout a seven-year period, El Mencho had been arrested and deported for crimes he committed in San Francisco, before sneaking into the U.S. three times, according to court and police records.
He first arrived in the San Francisco Bay Area when he was about 19, after moving in with his brother, friends, and other family members.
He was first arrested in 1986, when San Francisco police caught El Mencho trying to sell a "meager street-level-sized stash of crystal meth," according to the Courier Journal. He was quickly deported after his conviction.
