I’ve lived in Chicago for over eight years, and I’ve experienced some of the coldest winters I have my entire life (and I grew up in the Midwest). Because of this, I’ve become a bit of an expert in buying puffer jackets (much to my husband and wallet’s dismay). This is only because I braved my first winter here with a very cheap jacket that looked the part (long, puffy, with a faux-fur hood) but offered little to no real insulation. I spent January through March freezing on the El, and swore to my husband that I would only be wearing real puffers from then on. Now, I have an entire closet filled with puffer jackets. From long ones to cropped, to ones that come with hoods and not, I’ve built an arsenal of jackets that I’ve taken to my job downtown, to school pick up and drop off, on walks with my neighborhood bestie. And after years of testing, I’ve found the coats that truly stand the test of negative windchill, below freezing temperatures, blizzards, and the occasional sleet. The best part? Some of my favorites are under $150, making the hassle of buying a new coat just a little more bearable. AmazonA budget-friendly puffer that you can get in so many colorsThe most affordable coat on the list, this Amazon Essentials jacket comes in under $75 and offers surprising warmth for being so budget-friendly. I love the length, which falls right at the knee, so it keeps my entire torso and thighs warm when I'm running from my car to the office. I'm a sucker for the white, since it elevates any outfit below, but it also comes in black, navy, army green, beige, sage green, purple, and light brown. It's not the warmest jacket on the list, but for the price, it offers enough insulation for most winter needs.Claire Gallam Volkman, Claire Gallam VolkmanNorth Face’s forever-classic Nuptse pufferThis jacket blends the cool style of 1990s après-ski culture with everyday wearability, and it's the puffer I reach for most in my closet during the freezing Chicago winters. Made with ultra-warm 700-fill down insulation, it stands up to even the coldest windchill (which was -42 last week) and comes with a high collar to keep the cold off your neck. I've gotten more compliments on this coat than any other, thanks to the white/black combo and flattering fit, which lands right at the waist. QuinceQuince’s responsible down pufferIf I could write a love letter about any brand in the world, it would almost exclusively be about Quince. I've been a Quince stan for years, and the moment I knew I’d be rounding up insulated winter coats, I clicked buy on the brand’s responsible puffer. An Aritzia Super Puff dupe, it's nearly half the cost of the competitor but brings more even more warmth. It's engineered to keep you toasty in temperatures as low as -48 degrees and is made from 100% recycled polyester. Plus, it comes in 10 colors, ranging from basics like black and gray to more vibrant hues, like cherry red and storm blue. Claire GallamAritzia’s viral “Super Puff” coatI've been lusting after Aritzia’s Super Puff jacket for literal years, and finally splurged this winter and bought one for myself. And let me tell you, it is every bit worth the price tag. Made with 100% responsibly sourced premium down, you'll feel at least 10 degrees warmer as soon as you put it on. Not only that, it's been tested and tested to withstand temperatures of up to -40. I love the length, it goes all the way down to my shoes, keeping my entire body warm when the freeze hits. Plus, it has a fur-lined hood that you can toss up above your ears for an extra layer of warmth. I have the white, which I've gotten multiple compliments on, but am also eying the black and plum burgundy for next year. (FYI, several colors are on sale right now starting at just $245 — a steal for this premium jacket.)Amazon, AmazonAn oversized, mom-friendly optionI'm not usually drawn to jackets that have enlarged pockets, but I saw this Orolay coat and was immediately intrigued. To start, I love a nice lined moment, especially when I'n navigating a 15-minute walk from my car to the office. This jacket is shockingly warm, and despite it's oversized fit, it's actually really flattering on my 5-foot-6 frame. I also love the colors, which aren't just boring basics — they're cute hues that could instantly boost your mood, like yellow and bright red. It's also a dream for a mom like me, who needs all six pockets to store phones, snacks, chapsticks, loose coins, and everything else my seven-year-old shoves at me. Claire Gallam Volkman, Claire Gallam VolkmanAn iridescent Athleta puffer with vintage vibesWhat drew me first to this Athleta coat, I'm slightly shamed to admit, was the color. A mix of pink and purple, this iridescent jacket reminds me of the ones I'd see in vintage ski commercials. Because I got it solely on looks alone, I didn't have high expectations on how it would perform in Chicago's brutal winter. I was so surprised to see it held up as well (if not better) than my North Face and Super Puff. Not only is it surprisingly warm, it has a cinch hoodie for a tighter fit around the face in cold wind, has thumbholes to protect your hands, and a removable hood when the weather warms up. The amount of compliments I get on this daily, from strangers and friends, is astronomical too. A vibe buy that truly lives up to the hype. Comfrt ClothingAn affordable Primaloft-filled coat that yes, TikTok made me buyI hate to say I was influenced on TikTok to buy something at my ripe age of 40, but I absolutely was with this jacket from Comfrt. To start, I was drawn by some of the colors: bright electric blue and hot pink? Yes please. (It looks like those colors were popular with other shoppers because they’re both currently sold out, but you can opt for this classic black and sign up for a restock notification in the meantime.) I also love the shape, which is a slight crop but still hits right at the waist for full torso coverage when it gets really cold. These jackets are filled with Primaloft insulation, and offer as much warmth as some of the more expensive puffers on the list (at half the price). You can also make an outfit with matching sweats for a set that instantly elevates. It also comes with a removable hood, so you can layer up when it's freeze, and remove when it starts to warm up. Claire Gallam, Claire GallamAn flattering insulated jacket for “regular” cold daysThis Mammut jacket is an outlier on the list, only because it's meant for the winter days that aren't brutally cold. However, I'm including it because it's my daily jacket when the weather is above-freezing. Not only is it super flattering with a structured fit that both protects and slims, it's ultra-packable, which makes it my go-to when I'm traveling anywhere in the winter. For as lightweight as it is, though, it's actually really warm. What I love most, though, is the fact it's sustainably produced — made with 100% recycled polyester and rope scraps.
