The National Council of CBSE Schools has sought Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar’s intervention to bring the reported increase in excessive screen time and digital dependency among children and adolescents before the appropriate authorities.

In a letter to Mr. Arlekar, the council suggested the formulation of a structured, age-oriented regulatory framework for students below 16 years to check digital overexposure. It proposed the development of State-level guidelines limiting unsupervised access to social media platforms.

Indira Rajan, secretary-general of the council, suggested the integration of digital literacy and digital citizenship education within the school curricula and the establishment of coordinated monitoring mechanisms involving parents and schools. The council suggested collaboration with technology stakeholders to implement stronger child-safety tools and age-verification systems.

The letter said the increasing influence of unregulated digital exposure was emerging as a serious educational, psychological and social challenge, particularly among students below 16 years of age.
