Feb. 20 (Asia Today) -- Former President Yoon Suk-yeol was sentenced to life in prison this week on charges of leading an insurrection, but he still faces six additional first-instance criminal trials, with appeals and constitutional challenges looming.

Televisions at Seoul Station showed live coverage of Wednesday's verdict as citizens watched the first-instance ruling. Yoon was sentenced 443 days after declaring emergency martial law on Dec. 3, 2024.

He is currently involved in eight criminal cases. In addition to the life sentence in the insurrection case, he received five years in prison in a separate case involving obstruction of arrest by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.

Six other first-instance trials remain pending, including charges related to alleged general acts benefiting the enemy, perjury, receipt of illegal opinion polls from Myung Tae-gyun, publication of false statements tied to a presidential campaign controversy, alleged pressure in the investigation into a marine's death and accusations of helping former Defense Minister Lee Jong-seop leave the country.
