Rubfarm, Kerala’s first rubber producers’ company formed by a collective of small-scale growers, has commenced manufacturing operations.

The company’s first product, launched from its facility near the Rubber Producers’ Society (RPS) at Kurumkanni in Kanjirappally, is a range of grow bags made using rubber sheets sourced from farmers who are shareholders of the company. Branded Maya Growbags, the product will be positioned as an eco-friendly alternative, with plans under way to distribute it through the three-tier panchayat network.

Formed by a consortium of 32 RPS units, the company procures latex directly from member societies at a premium above prevailing market prices. In addition to dividends for shareholders, farmers supplying raw materials will also receive a patronage bonus.

Company officials said a delegation of experts from the German organisation Andreas Hermes Academy (AHA), which has been providing training and technical guidance to the collective, recently visited the factory and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the activities.
