The Gujarat government on Friday (February 20, 2026) announced that it will amend the rules under the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, stating that the move is intended to plug procedural loopholes and prevent alleged misuse of the existing system.

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, speaking in the Assembly, said the government had received representations from individuals and social organisations seeking stricter norms in the marriage registration process.

He alleged that “innocent girls are being trapped” and claimed that such practices were spreading in society. Referring to what he described as “love jihad”, Mr. Sanghavi termed it a “cultural invasion” and said the government would strengthen safeguards through amendments to the rules.

The government has invited objections and suggestions from the public for 30 days. “People and organisations can submit their suggestions and objections on the Health and Family Welfare Department’s website. The new rules will be finalised after considering the responses received,” he said.
