Feb. 19 (Asia Today) -- Canada has announced a sweeping C$500 billion ($370 billion) defense and security investment plan aimed at reshaping its industrial base and reducing reliance on the United States, a move that could open opportunities for South Korean defense and infrastructure firms.

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that a security structure dependent on geography and foreign partners "is no longer sustainable," outlining a strategy that links weapons procurement, domestic industry and infrastructure development.

The plan includes C$50 billion in direct defense spending over five years, C$180 billion in arms and equipment procurement over a decade and C$290 billion in related infrastructure investment.

Industry observers say Ottawa is seeking not just off-the-shelf weapons but integrated partnerships that include force modernization, local production, supply chain resilience and Arctic infrastructure development.
