Trump Says He’ll Disenfranchise Voters ‘One Way Or The Other’President Donald Trump indicated renewed support Thursday for what is misleadingly titled the “Save America Act,” a GOP proposal that would impose strict voter ID requirements and likely disenfranchise the tens of millions of Americans who don’t have citizenship documents on hand. While the bill has passed the House, it has slim chances in the Senate, where under the current rules it would need the support of every Republican and at least seven Democrats. Trump apparently believes he has a method to circumvent that.“We are going to have the Save America Act, one way or the other, after approval by Congress through the very proper use of the Filibuster or, at minimum, by a Talking Filibuster, à la ‘Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,’” he wrote on social media.Trump continued:"1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER I.D. (IDENTIFICATION!).2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF CITIZENSHIP IN ORDER TO VOTE.3. NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY, OR TRAVEL!)."It's worth noting that Trump himself regularly votes by mail. He also thinks you need ID to buy cereal at the grocery store.Trump’s invocation of the “talking filibuster” is a reference to his belief that the Senate should change its rules to force senators to filibuster by physically talking, instead of relying on the “silent filibuster” that’s been the practice of the upper chamber since the 1970s.Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) has said he doesn’t support changing the filibuster rules.
