South Korea's impeached president Yook Suk Yeol has been convicted of leading an insurrection when he imposed martial law in December 2024.

The move, which was reversed by parliament in hours, threw the young democracy into uncharted terrain with months of protests and political turmoil.

Yoon was arrested, impeached and indicted for various charges in connection with the botched martial law order.

Thursday's verdict is the 65-year-old politician's second conviction, after he was jailed last month for abusing power, obstructing justice and falsifying documents.

He is already serving a five-year prison sentence and now faces the death penalty, for leading an insurrection. But it is, in effect, a life sentence because South Korea has not carried out an execution since the late 1990s.
